Prevailing Wage Law Adds to Cost of Road Projects in Franklin County

Jim Hook - Senior writer
Public Opinion (Chambersburg, Pennsylvania)

Prevailing wage rates added tens of thousands of dollars to the cost of three paving contracts in Hamilton and Greene townships this summer.

Prices from the same contractors to do the same jobs jumped anywhere from 7 percent to 27 percent when prevailing wages were factored in.

Paving township roads in Greene Township jumped more than $100,000. Paving less than a mile of road in Hamilton Township rose by nearly $10,000.

Doing something about the prevailing wage law is a top priority for the Franklin County Council of Governments. Municipal leaders from across the county will meet in a special session at 9 a.m. Wednesday to discuss ways to overturn the prevailing wage law. Legislators have been invited to the public meeting in the board room of the Chambersburg Area School District administration building, 435 Stanley Ave.
